The Spirit of Texas: Emilee + Michael

One of the most beneficial things about college is not what you learn, but the people you meet. Emilee is an amazing artist that I meet in a screen printing class while attending Texas State university studying Fine Art Photography. When she told me her wedding was going to be on a boat in Galveston, I was intrigued. Part of me was nervous about being stuck on a boat with limited opportunities for photographs… but I always love a good challenge. It actually turned out to be a perfect evening with a beautiful sunset and the crew aboard The Spirit of Texas Paddle Wheeler where so accommodating. They brought the boat by some spectacular scenery which made the perfect backdrop for all the family pictures and portraits of the bride and groom. For all you DIY brides out there, make sure to check out the video at the bottom of the custom invitations the bride made. Also check out the time lapse video of the whole boat trip around the Galveston bay… fun times. Enjoy!

Mary & Joseph’s Wedding at St. Anne Catholic Church in Houston

This is my third wedding to photograph at St. Anne’s Catholic church in Houston. Mary & Joseph had there ceremony at this beautiful church and the reception at the Houston Heights Firehouse. It is a very impressive church and I love to shoot from the balcony. The day was perfect… here are some of my favorite shots from the wedding.

Before/After HDR Processing: Saint Anne Church in Houston

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. The technique basically involves taking multiple, bracketed exposures, of the same scene and then processing them together to produce an image with more information or “Dynamic Range”. I often use this technique at weddings to capture wedding venues and churches in all their glory! Hallelujah! It is especially useful when there are nice clouds or dramatic lighting to enhance the effect.

I usually take three shots using the AUTO bracket feature on my camera. First shot is -2 stops, Second one is a normal Exposure, and the third one is +2 stops. Notice the first shot, everything is dark but the clouds and the blue sky come out great. The Normal shot looks OK, but there is not much color or detail in the shadows. In the third shot, the sky is blown out, but there is a lot of information in the shadows. So taking the best segments of each shot we can create an image that has the most information and detail possible.

I use a program called PhotoMatix to process all my HDR’s. It is a great program designed specifically for Tone Mapping HDR photos. After I get the final 16bit image out of PhotoMatix, I bring it back into LightRoom for the final edits. I add some clarity, contrast, saturation and sometimes tweak the colors a little. The final image should be vibrant, brilliant, and capture the essence of the location.

Houston Wedding Photography: Jessica and Michael’s Ceremony

Jessica and Michael got married on August 8th 2009 in Houston Texas. The wedding took place at the New Port Country Club in Crosby Texas. I am proud to have Michael as the newest member of our Family. Most of my family was in attendance for my cousins wedding so we all had a great time! The Photo Booth provided by Lone Star Photo booth was such a hit! Cramming 7 people into a tiny box was a lot harder than I imagined. I posted way to many ring shots, but I just love them all! Enjoy, I will post the more images from the reception in a few days.

Mr. and Mrs. Sanchez

I used my Lens Baby Composure for all the Macro shots of the rings. I LOVE that lens! I use a 10x macro adapter and the tele-converter to get in real close.
